Water companies in the UK have been raising charges significantly since privatisation in 1989. They require significant reinvestment to maintain and grow their networks of pipes, sewers, and treatment works. They are controlled by legislation which is increasing the demands on drinking water quality and discharges to water courses.

These charges are raised by each water company in different ways. You may find that a site in one water companies area has a much larger bill than an equivalent site in another area.

These differences are one of the reasons why water charges may be high, however the mechanism of charging and the unit rate of water is not the only reason for high charges!
